Top Ten Reasons NOT to Have Auto-Playing Music on Your Profile
Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 10:16AM I hope nobody takes this offensively, these are just some of the reasons I think people shouldn't play music automatically on their profiles. I know many of you are going to anyway and that's cool, this is just my opinion.
- Not everyone on the planet, indeed not even all of your friends share your personal taste in music.
- Even if everyone did share your taste in music, they would open their own media player to hear it if that's what they wanted to do.
- If you really absolutely must have autoplaying music on your profile, don't use a player that I have to scroll down and search your page to find, and don't use one that doesn't have a very clear "stop" button.
- If I am browsing profiles and happen to also be listening to my own music, YOUR music playing a few seconds after I open your page is excruciatingly annoying and sometimes confuses me for a minute before I realize it's just some inconsiderate person's profile, and not my media player glitching.
- If I have more than one profile open, as I often do, it can sometimes be hard to tell where the music is coming from. This makes it more difficult to shut off which leads me to #6
- Say I'm browsing profiles on my lunch from work, and I happen across a profile with autoplaying music halfway down the page and I don't notice until its' already half-way into the lyric about someone's milkshake that it's being blared to my whole office at about 6,000 decibels.
- I often watch movies and TV online.... legally, of course.... and sometimes the movie is very quiet, and I have to turn my volume up. Or I have my volume up anyway, which I ofen do, and I had simply turned down the volume on the player. Then your profile starts playing a maximum volume, something to the tune of "SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET" both shattering my eardrums and annoying my roommate or coworkers.
- With internet such as mine, which is supposed to be around 1.5 mbps, but is really about 300 kbps most days, even if I go and pause your music, it still preloads and significantly slows my internet while it's doing so.
- It's perfectly ok to have music on your profile. But if we want to listen to it, we'll be the ones to hit play.
- The final reason not to have autoplaying music on your profile: Because I said so. B-)
If anyone has anything else to add including reasons why I'm wrong, I invite you to say so in the replies. :-)

Not only do people set the music to auto play, many like to hide the off buttons.
Whenever people ask how to hide their music players on myspace, I like to send them to an article, that has irritating background music playing, and no obvious way to turn it off.
